Papers of Claude Augustus Swanson [manuscript], 1917-1922.

The collection consists primarily of correspondence with constituents and fellow legislators concerning Senate bills, constituent requests, and appointments and invitations. Major topics include Armenian refugees and the Armenian-Turkish conflict; disarmament; Hampton Roads and the impact made by World War I; prohibition; second class mail rates; tariffs and taxes particularly the Fordney-McCumber Tariff Act; the Sheppard-Towner Maternity and Infancy Act; the World War I Adjusted Compensation (soldiers' bonus) Act; Naval Academy appointments; and letters of introduction and recommendation. Constituent concerns include claims against federal and state agencies, especially the U.S. Army; pardons; personal effects of soldiers; liberty bonds; government war surplus; personal problems; and difficulties with foreign governments. Subjects in the general correspondence files include Camp Lee and Fort Eustis; the Virginia coal mining industry; the Esch-Cummins Transportation Act; the Farm Loan Act and other agricultural legislation; the Irish Civil War; immigration; the Muscle Shoals nitrate plant; pollution of streams; the Towner-Sterling Education Bill; the University of Virginia Medical School consolidation; and Yorktown, Va. Miscellaneous items include a scrapbook of copies of clippings and photographs, a song by Blanche Hardy Consolvo and other printed miscellany. Many prominent national and Virginia politicians are represented by routine letters, often forwarding consitutent requests. Some noted Virginia women are represented by letters in support of the Sheppard-Towner Act.
